HM Prison Send is a closed category women's prison in Surrey, England. It offers various units, courses and schemes for inmates, and has a history of self-harm and suicide issues. Community Arts Projects obtained its contract to provide art session in this premise since 2021.
In HMP Send, over the span of nine months, our dedicated students, despite facing considerable limitations in terms of resources and experience, have managed to cultivate an incredibly positive atmosphere for the children and families who come to visit their mothers, grandmothers, sisters, wives, and partners. This initiative has not only transformed the environment within the prison but has also made a significant impact on the emotional well-being of those involved in the visiting process. The visits can often be fraught with anxiety and sadness, but our efforts have worked to alleviate some of that tension, creating a more welcoming and uplifting space for families during these challenging times.
One of the most notable projects we undertook was the implementation of a vibrant circus theme that decorates the walls of the stairwell leading up to the visiting room. This creative endeavour was designed to bring a sense of joy and excitement to the visit, offering a whimsical escape from the starkness often associated with prison environments. The colourful murals and playful illustrations of circus scenes, complete with clowns, acrobats, and animals, invite children and adults alike to engage in a moment of imagination and fun as they make their way to see their loved ones. Each step along the stairwell is adorned with cheerful imagery that not only brightens the physical space but also serves as a reminder of the joy of family connections, even in difficult circumstances.
Through these efforts, we have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of art and creativity in fostering a supportive community within HMP Send. The positive atmosphere created by our students not only enhances the visiting experience but also reinforces the importance of family bonds. As children and family members approach the visiting room, they are greeted not just by the sight of their loved ones, but also by an environment that encourages laughter and connection. This initiative has proven to be a remarkable testament to what can be achieved with limited resources when there is a shared vision and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
